Frequently asked questions
What conditions does Dr. Uhr treat?
Dr. Uhr is a board-certified urologist. He treats benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate), kidney stones, and cancers of the urinary tract and male reproductive organs — prostate, bladder, kidney, ureters, testicles and adrenal glands — and helps men recover after treatment from erectile dysfunction, penile curvature and stress urinary incontinence. Much of his surgery is minimally invasive and robotic.
What are my options for an enlarged prostate (BPH)?
Treatment ranges from medication to procedures that open the urethra: UroLift implants for mild-to-moderate enlargement with quick recovery and no effect on sexual function, TURP, and HoLEP laser enucleation, which removes the entire obstructing tissue for prostates of any size with very low bleeding and re-treatment rates. Dr. Uhr chooses based on your symptoms, prostate size and goals.
How are kidney stones treated?
Many small stones pass on their own with medication. Stones that do not pass are treated with shock-wave lithotripsy from outside the body, or ureteroscopy with laser lithotripsy through the natural urinary tract. Dr. Uhr also runs metabolic testing to find out why you form stones and how to prevent the next one.
Does Dr. Uhr perform robotic surgery?
Yes. Minimally invasive robotic surgery is used for prostatectomy, partial and radical nephrectomy and other kidney and prostate procedures, offering smaller incisions, less pain and a faster recovery than open surgery.
I leak urine after my prostatectomy. Can it be fixed?
Yes. Roughly 1 in 10 men still leak a year after prostate surgery. Pelvic-floor therapy helps mild leakage; for persistent leakage Dr. Uhr offers two fully concealed implants — the AdVance XP male sling for mild to moderate incontinence and the AMS 800 artificial urinary sphincter for moderate to severe leakage, after which 60–96% of men use one pad or none per day.
What are my options for erectile dysfunction after prostate cancer treatment?
Penile rehabilitation begins soon after surgery to help the erectile nerves recover. If ED persists, options include oral medications, a vacuum erection device, penile injections, and a penile implant such as the AMS 700, which is fully concealed and gives a reliable erection whenever you choose. In a survey of 80 men with an AMS 700 implant, 97% would recommend it to a friend.
Is Dr. Uhr accepting new patients?
Yes. You can book online through Jefferson Health, call Urological Associates at (215) 632-8882, or call JEFF NOW at 1-800-JEFFNOW (1-800-533-3669). Existing patients seen within the past three years can schedule directly in MyJeffersonHealth.
Where does Dr. Uhr see patients and operate?
Office visits are at Urological Associates, 3998 Red Lion Road, Suite 305, Philadelphia, PA 19114 (wheelchair accessible). Dr. Uhr operates at Jefferson Bucks Hospital and Jefferson Torresdale Hospital.
Do I need a referral to see Dr. Uhr?
It depends on your insurance. Many HMO and Medicaid plans require a referral from your primary care physician before seeing a specialist; most PPO plans do not. Call the office and we will check your plan.
Which insurance plans does Dr. Uhr accept?
Dr. Uhr participates with more than 40 plans through Jefferson Health, including Aetna, Cigna, Independence Blue Cross, Highmark, Horizon, Humana, United Healthcare, Medicare, and Pennsylvania Medical Assistance plans. See the full list on this page and confirm coverage with the office before your visit.
